The last time The Low Anthem played at 9:30 Club, earlier this year, I wasn’t able to make it. But they are absolute road warriors (they’ve toured Europe 7 or 8 times already) so I knew I’d have another chance real soon. Luckily, I didn’t have to wait long, as they were the opening act for Iron and Wine last night in DC.

Monday night, my wife and I attended, “An Evening with Barbara Kellner” up at The Columbia Art Center. Mrs. Kellner spoke about how Rouse’s speeches moved people to act. It was a great lecture which included audio of Mr. Rouse himself. Here’s a clip of Rouse giving a speech in 1963 that outlined his vision of Columbia:

Tonight at 7:30, The Columbia Art Center will host “An Evening with Barbara Kellner” as part of its Salon Series. Mrs. Kellner will present an examination of James Rouse’s speeches to illustrate his power to persuade and compel people to act. It should be a very cool lecture, and I encourage everyone to try to make it.

After hearing the rumors for months, it’s official. Michael’s Pub is closing after 25 years in the Kings Contrivance village center. For those of us who grew up in Columbia, this hurts. A lot. When I was in my early 20′s, Michael’s was THE place to be. I could go in there any night of the week and know just about everybody in there. The bartenders did more than just pour our drinks. They were (and still are) our friends. Everybody has their own memories of Michael’s, and I certainly do to. But I’ll save mine for another time. For now, it just hurts too much to think about losing a place I loved.

T.U.R.N. has a big show at The Recher Theater this Friday night. Fresh off a Northeast tour and a showcase gig at Rams Head Live, these guys are hot right now. It won’t be long before they’re headlining their own tour, so get out and see them while you can! Here they are playing their hit, “Layers and Lines” late last year at Michael’s Pub.
